I can’t keep it in! I want to tell everyone, shout it from the rooftops!
Not five hours since, the most beautiful and magnificent human being it has been my privilege to know, paid the singular honour of asking if I would join them in perhaps the most sacred adventure remaining to me.
To say I am overjoyed would be an obscenity.
I am jubilant!
It is fitting that you, my dearest friends, should be the first to know.
It was here after all, on these unworthy pages, that I tentatively introduced the individual in question. There was some friction at the time, I remember, a natural anxiety that my attention was being diverted from you, but nay, for my part, that was never the case. At any rate, we are a family at peace again, all water under the bridge and I hope you will join me in offering a Cape to Rio welcome.
I know you will.
I have been engaged previously in similarly uncertain circumstances but I have given my assurance this time that I will not drop the ball.
James (Jimmy) McGlinchey, the Cumbernauld Cat, wants me as his ghost writer! That’s right! ME! Can you believe it? I haven’t slept.

May I be the first to congratulate you! Of course, Jim rang me last night with the news, telling me he'd turned down Hunter Davies and called him a prick.
I told him he'd done the right thing. Anyone who's seen you beavering away, as I have, would know you are the man for the job.

Felicitations, Dr M. Of course, Jimmy must have dropped a few balls, but a man of your calibre will, without effort, put a positive spin on that. The sort of spin that took the ball under his body in that relegation tussle against Forres Mechanics.

I regret that the London papers no longer publish the attendance figures for the lower depths of the Scottish league. You know the sort of thing: Ross County 2, Partick 0 (att. 271). I miss these reminders of futility.

Absolutely fabulous Dr Maroon.

Is that Jimmy "The cat" McGlinchey, currently serving 15 years in Barlinne for armed burglary?

Dr Maroon said...

Clarissa, you just have to love him, don't you? When I think how he shimmied into my consulting rooms like Lionel Blair...no, I'd better keep it for the book.
Yes, we were all disappointed with Hunter. After Wayne, well, he's become a bit presumptuous truth be told.
Anyway, who better than me, a seasoned palette, able to delve through the distracting polka dots of this life and take Jim through his recollections?

Inkspot, NO!
Partick nil Ross County 2?
Shome mishtake shurely?
Although I take your point. Is there anything better than being in Shanghai listening to the World Service about the arrest of twenty English plane spotters in Greece? No there is not. It works on so many levels. One can smell the HB pencil sharpenings, hear the turbojets of the obsolete airforce, feel the sunshine of an endless English summer and the rough handcuffs of a foreign gaol as they claim their inalienable right to record the comings and goings of military aircraft in a semi hostile state.
Knocks Port Vale into a cocked hat.

Kim, Nay lad. Anyway, it's called aggravated burglary.

No, Pat he is the triple medal hero of Behjing (para). "I owe it all to you, Doctor." Is his catchphrase. You must have seen him with Fern and Paul?

So do I Conan but a Maroon always goes forward. We must. There is no alternative.

HA HA Beijing Pat NOT Behjing.

No? "The Cat" can only be a 'keeper, and Jimmy "The Cat" McGlinchey was between the posts for Partick in 62-63 (season cancelled due to frost). Really, Dr, you've got to watch out for impostors.

No, Inky. You've got hold of the wrong Jimmy. This is McGlinchy (no 'e').
Can't stop - off to London with Scarls. There's an Aviation with my name on it at Joe Allen.

I'm afraid i don't know anything about your Cumbernald Cat despite him being his own whiskers. However I do very much love to see you so buoyed and excited, Docs. Congratulations, ol' chum!

Thank God for Sam - I'm not alone in my ignorance. Fern, Paul, Behjing.
I'm still in the dark - floundering - although I've just received Fern Brittain's new book:)
